We regard sport as an important part of the pupils’ education.  For many boys it is a highlight of their day - along with being fed!  Educationally, we regard it as important that all pupils should take part and that all should have the opportunity to represent the school in one of the many teams each term.  Sport’s value extends beyond the pleasure of playing and pupils learn much from taking part about team work, handling success and failure, and those critical life attributes of determination and perseverance.

Brockhurst is competitive in its major prep school games but we also differ from many other schools in that we place considerable weight on excellence in minor sports and we have the facilities to do so.  For the majority of pupils who are not first team players in the major sports of Football, Rugby and Cricket, the minor sports offer great opportunities for enjoyment and success and often unlikely pupils discover facets sporting talent which have marked benefits for their self esteem and confidence.

Outdoor games are played every afternoon and all boys participate in the following:

Autumn Term
Soccer and Hockey and Swimming

Spring Term
Rugby, Hockey, Cross-Country Running and Swimming

Summer Term
Cricket, Athletics and Swimming

Other activities include:

Tennis: We have three all-weather courts and one indoor court

Riding:  Takes place on the Farm and the school has its own ponies in addition to those brought by pupils

Shooting: .177 Indoor rifle range

Swimming: 25m competition indoor pool

Golf: Chip and putt course

Indoor sports take place in a large multi- purpose sports hall and include: Judo, Tennis, Short Tennis, Badminton, Indoor Cricket nets, Five-a-side football, Basket Ball, Gymnastics, and Fencing.

The school employs specialist physical education instructors and professional coaches for tennis, golf, fencing and Judo. Boys who are particularly talented at a game are encouraged to develop their skills by playing at county level and the school has achieved outstanding results in recent years in Judo and Swimming at national level.
